24.9. Rechargeable battery
The rechargeable battery is located in the right back part of a luggage carrier, under the floor panel.
At a detachment of plugs of the battery in blocks of memory of control units data on the written-down malfunctions therefore before a detachment of plugs it is recommended to address in a specialized workshop for a call from memory of the malfunctions which are written down in it are erased. After connection of the plug of the accumulator it is necessary to activate and reprogram window regulators with the electric drive, and also the provision of rear-view mirrors and seats.
If the radio receiver with a code is installed in the car, then before a detachment of plugs from the rechargeable battery, check whether you have a code for repeated activation of the receiver. Otherwise it will be possible to put the radio receiver into operation only in a specialized workshop.
The new rechargeable battery has to be equipped with system of removal of the gases which are formed during the operation of the battery.
Rules of care of the rechargeable battery
To keep high performance of the rechargeable battery for a long time, it is necessary:
– at the idle engine to switch off all electric devices in the car;
– to disconnect a wire from the negative plug of the rechargeable battery;
– each 15–20 days (through 2500 km of a run) to clear the rechargeable battery of dirt in order to avoid its self-discharge. With the same purpose it is necessary to eliminate begin to flow electrolyte and to isolate a fixing frame from the case;
– the rechargeable battery has to be reliably fixed on the car. You watch that tips of wires were strongly fixed on plugs of the rechargeable battery, otherwise explosion is possible;
– the rechargeable battery can continuously work in the "starter" mode no more than 15 with; the break between cycles has to 'make not less than 60 with;
– to periodically check the voltmeter tension developed by the generator. Readings need to be taken directly on plugs of the rechargeable battery at the working, heated-up engine. The size of tension has to be within 13,8-14,5 B;
– on the served rechargeable batteries it is desirable to check the level and density of electrolyte through each 3000 km. Level of electrolyte is checked on a special mark in transparent cases or by means of a special glass tube in opaque cases. Electrolyte has to close the upper edge of plates on 10–15 mm. Density of electrolyte is checked by the areometer. If density is lower than 1,23 g/cm3 in the winter and 1,19 g/cm3 in the summer, recharge is necessary; – even if the generator and the regulator of tension are serviceable, and the level of electrolyte is normal, recharge by means of the charger is necessary once a month in the winter and each six months in other season; – the accumulator which is filled in with electrolyte can be stored only completely loaded, at the same time density of electrolyte should be checked once a month.
Exercises of the rechargeable battery are done current which force makes 0,1 nominal capacities. For example, the battery with a capacity of 50 And / needs to be charged with current with a force of 5 And at the unscrewed traffic jams of bulk openings h. You should not fill in electrolyte with a density more than 1,28 g/cm3 in the battery. Trying to increase thus starting current, it is possible to put for a short period the battery out of action. For the same reason it is possible to bring electrolyte level to norm only the distilled water. In the opaque served battery the level of electrolyte can be measured by means of a hollow glass tubule, having closed one its end a finger. In the taken "sample" liquid column height in a tube will correspond to height of excess of level of electrolyte over the upper edge of plates. To remove begin to flow electrolyte or it is possible to neutralize impact of electrolyte on surrounding objects by means of 10% solution of liquid ammonia or soda. Operation of the discharged battery, especially is not allowed in the winter. In the discharged battery too high content of water in electrolyte, it can freeze and put the battery case out of action. Do not try to charge the frozen rechargeable battery with current of big force or to launch the car from a foreign source. Let's the battery thaw, and then try to restore its work as charging as current of small force. Such battery still can serve. The crack in bank of the served rechargeable battery not always demands its replacement. Pour out electrolyte, dry up, wash out gasoline a crack and process it a file. Mix the sawdust formed when cutting a crack with epoxy glue or hard putty. Carefully cover with the received structure a crack. After such procedure fill in electrolyte not earlier than in 24 hours.
Check of the rechargeable battery
Check electrolyte density in the rechargeable battery every 3 month.
An inspection is carried out the areometer. When determining density of electrolyte it is necessary to consider its temperature. At a temperature of electrolyte below 15 °C on each 10 °C below this temperature subtract value 0,007 from the measured density; over 15 °C – add 0,007.
Electrolyte density in the rechargeable battery has to be in the following limits:
higher than 25
lower than 25
Loaded for 70%
Measure density of electrolyte in each can. The difference in density 0,04 or more between two any banks indicates loss of electrolyte or sulphation of plates.
If electrolyte density between two any banks differs more than on 0,04, the rechargeable battery should be replaced. If density of electrolyte is lower demanded, but identical in all banks, the battery needs to be charged.
Operability of the unattended rechargeable battery can be checked only the voltmeter. Degree of state of charge of the battery with the built-in indicator is determined by color of the indicator. Green color of the indicator corresponds to a full charge, black – indicates the need of charging, blue – demonstrates to the low level of electrolyte in the battery.
Charging of the rechargeable battery
Before charging remove the rechargeable battery from the car.
For charging use charging or the charging starting arrangement. Charge the battery with the current equal 0,1 capacities of the battery until density of electrolyte does not increase within 4 hours.
Use of current of big force for bystry charging of the rechargeable battery as in this case plates of the accumulator can warp because of an overheat is not recommended.
During battery charging temperature of electrolyte should not exceed 37,8 °C.
Removal of the rechargeable battery

Switch off ignition. Remove the right side decorative panel and the panel of a trunk floor. Disconnect the tire of grounding of the rechargeable battery located in the floor panel. Remove the negative plug 1 from the rechargeable battery and move it (fig. 18-11) aside.
Disconnect from the rechargeable battery a hose 4 for removal of gases.
Turn off a bolt 3 and remove an arm of fastening of the rechargeable battery.
Remove the battery from the car.
Installation is carried out to the sequences, the return to removal, taking into account the following.
At installation do not press the hose intended for removal of the gases which are emitted during the operation of the rechargeable battery. In the pipeline of removal of gases there is a valve which protects the battery from a backfire.
Fix the rechargeable battery by an arm and screw in a bolt of its fastening, having tightened the moment 20 N · m.
Check reliability of fastening of the rechargeable battery, otherwise service life of the battery can be reduced.
Connect to the battery at first the positive plug, then negative and fix plugs, having tightened fastening nuts the moment of 5 N · m.
Turn on the radio receiver and enter into it a code.
Lift glasses power windows up to an emphasis. Then press all switches of a window regulator once again, at least for 1 second, in the provision of closing for activation of the control unit of window regulators.
Determine time on hours.
System of charging
If the control lamp of battery charging does not burn at inclusion of ignition, check reliability of connection of wires to the generator, serviceability of a control lamp and an integrity of its chain. If the lamp still does not burn, check an electric chain from the generator to a lamp. If all electric chains are serviceable, so the generator is faulty and it should be replaced or repaired.
If the control lamp of battery charging burns during the operation of the engine, stop the engine and check a state and a tension of a driving belt of the generator, and also connection of wires to the generator.
The regulator of tension can be checked as follows.
Connect the voltmeter to the rechargeable battery and launch the engine.
Increase rotation frequency before stabilization of indications of the voltmeter which has to show 12–13 V, but no more than 14 Century.
Include the maximum number of consumers of the electric power (headlights, a heater of back glass, the heater fan). At the same time tension developed by the generator with tension regulator has to make 13–14 Century.
If tension does not correspond to these values, worn-out brushes of the generator, weak springs of brushes, faulty the regulator of tension or the diode, break of a winding of the stator or defective contact rings of a rotor can be a cause of defect.
