1.6. System of safety cushions
Forward safety cushions
The system of forward safety cushions together with seat belts in addition protects the heads and the top parts of bodies of the driver and passenger on a front seat in case of serious head-on collisions.
Prevention
The maximum protective action of seat belts and safety cushions is reached only at the correct adjustment of seats.
The system of forward safety cushions does not work:
– at side blows;
– blows in a back part of the car;
– capsizing;
– light front blows.
Safety cushions do not replace seat belts at all and are one of important elements of passive safety of the car. It must be kept in mind that the greatest efficiency of action of safety cushions is reached only when sharing them with seat belts.
The system of safety cushions includes:
– electronic control unit system and control of its functional readiness (control unit);
– two safety cushions (airbags with a gas generator) for the driver (in a steering wheel) and the forward passenger (in the dashboard);
– a control lamp in a combination of devices.
Functional readiness of system is controlled by the electronic device.
After each inclusion of ignition the control lamp of system of safety cushions lights up for several seconds (self-examination).
Violation of functional readiness of system is demonstrated by the following:
– at inclusion of ignition the control lamp does not light up;
– approximately through 3 from later inclusion of ignition the control lamp does not die away;
– after inclusion of ignition the control lamp dies away and then again begins to burn;
– during the movement the control lamp burns or flickers.
Prevention
In each case of violation of functional readiness of system given above it is necessary to check surely it in the service enterprise Volkswagen. Otherwise there is a danger that in case of need pillows will not work properly.
The system of safety cushions works at strong head-on collisions.

The sizes of the sector of the direction of front blow at which there is an operation of system are presented in fig. 1-14.
At operation of system airbags are filled with working gas and, being inflated, are deployed before the driver and the passenger.
At an emphasis of the driver and forward passenger in completely mumpish airbags the movement of their bodies forward by inertia is extinguished, and the risk of getting injured of the head and upper body significantly decreases.
The airbag is designed in such a way that at front blow under the influence of loading from a body of the driver or the passenger sitting near it there is a controlled production of gas from a pillow for mitigation of blow of the head and an upper body. After collision the airbag becomes empty and does not disturb the review.
Filling of a pillow happens to high speed in only a few fractions of a second, as provides reliable protection at accident.
Emergence in salon of a large amount of fine dust at inflation of safety cushions is considered normal and cannot serve as the reason for concern.
Side safety cushions
Side safety cushions are placed in pillows of backs of front seats. You can identify them on the inscription AIRBAG in the top part of the back of seatbacks.
The system of side pillows together with seat belts in addition protects an upper body of the driver and passenger on a front seat in case of serious side crashes.
The system of side safety cushions does not work:
– at front blows;
– light side blows;
– blows in a back part of the car;
– capsizing.
The system of side safety cushions is not replacement to seat belts at all and represents an important element of passive safety of the car.
The system of side safety cushions includes:
– electronic control unit system and control of its functional readiness (control unit);
– safety cushions on each side back party of backs of front seats;
– a control lamp in a combination of devices.
At strong side blows the safety cushion from collision works.
At the special, combined types of collisions both forward, and side safety cushions can work.
Preventions
All works connected with side pillows and also installation and dismantle of devices of this system when carrying out other works (for example, at removal of front seats) should be carried out only in the service enterprise Volkswagen.
Between the passenger sitting on a front seat and the location of a pillow there should not be people, animal or various objects. Besides, it is impossible to attach various accessories, for example coasters to doors.
On hooks for clothes it is possible to hang up only small and easy things.
For small things it is impossible to store in pockets heavy or with sharp sides objects.
Lateral faces of a seatback cannot be subjected to influence of big forces, for example strong blows or pressing, – at the same time it is possible to damage system of side safety cushions.
It is impossible to put on front seats at all covers which are not recommended by manufacturer. Otherwise at disclosure of side safety cushions their protective action will be limited.
The pillows which underwent critical loading in road accident need to be replaced.
