2.14. Replacement and check of level of oil in the automatic transmission

Level of gearbox oil in the automatic transmission depends on oil temperature. Exact measurement of temperature requires the diagnostic equipment therefore this work is recommended to be performed at Volkswagen service station. Usually oil level in the automatic transmission remains to constants if places of leaks are visually not visible. In that case there is no need to check it.
When checking temperature of gearbox oil has to be below +35 °C that is reached through small time after launch of the engine. For determination of temperature it is necessary to connect the diagnostic equipment of VW to the socket. Otherwise temperature can be determined only approximately.
When checking it is necessary to use goggles.

Unscrew a stopper of 2 (fig. 2-21, 2-22) of a drain opening and merge oil from the transmission.
Screw in into place a stopper 2 with new laying and tighten its moment 40 N · m.
Unscrew a stopper of 1 oil-filling opening.
Suspend the container V.A.G 1924 with G 052 162 A oil above the transmission, for example at the level of facing of a radiator.
Fill in oil from the container V.A.G 1924 to bottom edge of an oil-filling opening.
Launch the engine in the mode of idling and add oil to bottom edge of an oil-filling opening.
Remove the container V.A.G 1924, screw in a stopper in an oil-filling opening and tighten it by hand.
During the operation of the engine idling press a pedal of a brake and move the selector lever serially to all provisions with a delay in each situation on 2–3 pages.
Switch off ignition.
Check oil level in the automatic transmission.

Check of level of oil
It is necessary to check oil level on the car which is in horizontal position with the transmission which is warmed up up to the temperature of 30 °C and the selector lever transferred to situation P. The conditioner and a heating system have to be switched off.
Connect the V.A.G 1551 device for reading of malfunctions.
Launch the engine in the mode of idling and check temperature of the transmission which has to be no more than 30 °C.
At a temperature of automatic transmission from +35 to +40 °C unscrew a carving stopper of 1 oil-filling opening (see fig. 2-21). Oil level normal if oil slightly follows outside (as a result of increase in level when heating).
If level is insufficient, add oil in an oil-filling opening.
Screw in a stopper in an oil-filling opening and tighten its moment 60 N · m.

Check of a condition of oil
When checking level of oil in the automatic transmission check also a condition of oil. Compare it on color, a smell and viscosity to new oil.
If oil in the transmission dark or almost black with a burned smell, so frictional overlays of the transmission are worn-out.
If oil in the transmission of dairy color, so water got to it. It can occur at continuous operation of the car for short trips. If color of oil does not change after a long trip, it is necessary to replace oil.
Oil can become dark brown color, sticky to the touch because of an overheat of the transmission or its too high level in a box. If replacement of oil does not yield result, it is necessary to address in a specialized workshop.
If when checking level of oil or replacing oil in an automatic box in oil particles of dirt or metal shaving are found, it is necessary to diagnose or repair the automatic transmission at specialized service station.
